Mercy Medical Center / University of Maryland First Year ResidencyStaff physicians are encouraged to admit their most interesting or complicated patients to this service. Patients are covered by one of four resident teams, all of whom have meaningful clinical responsibility. Medical service patients, i.e., those without a private physician, are divided between the four resident teams.

The teams consist of first year residents and senior medical students (acting interns), one or two junior medical students, a supervising internal medicine resident (second or third year), and an attending physician. Team size averages six learners per service.

Staff physicians sometimes admit patients as non-teaching. The residents do not see these patients unless an emergency arises. A senior resident plays a major role in deciding which patients should be classified as non-teaching.
